The herring spawn on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

At the end of winter, Pacific herrings congregate in mass to spawn on eelgrass in shallow waters on the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This spectacular annual event attracts a lot of wildlife such as sea lions, bald eagles, ducks, many other birds, and mammals such as river otters and minks. Orcas and humpback whales can be seen from the shoreline.

Join me for a photo excursion on the East coast of Vancouver Island! We spend our entire time in the outdoors to photograph nature and wildlife. Before the workshop, I scout the region to find places where wildlife is the most active. Although the exact moment of spawning is unpredictable (it usually happens between the end of February and April), wildlife activity during this period is intense. When the spawn happens, you can observe the water turning a milky turquoise and the ensuing feeding frenzy from birds and mammals. At low tide, we can see herring eggs deposited on eelgrass and rocks. Note that we keep a safe and respectful distance from wildlife at all times and are very careful not to step on the herring eggs. They are part of a complex ecosystem that we must respect and protect.

Photo tours are given on land only (not from a boat) so we have plenty of room for ourselves and our tripods. Being on a stable ground means sharper images and lower shutter speeds. The tour won't be cancelled because of a stormy sea since we photograph from the shoreline. In addition, we can quickly travel from one location to another as wildlife moves along the coast.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Immerse yourself in a hands-on learning experience with a local photographer, who knows the right times and places for wildlife and landscape photography.

  • Learn about the fundamentals of nature photography, the art of seeing and ethical photography, with a small group of people who share the same interests for nature and photography (limited to 3 participants).

  • Improve your vision and creativity. Learn how to prepare for nature photography outings. Get to know your camera better.

  • Learn about the diversity of species in the region.

  • Expect a friendly atmosphere.

The workshop is designed for photographers of all skill levels and focus on wildlife, nature, landscape and abstract photography. It takes place in the outdoors only. We start early morning to take advantage of the light and wildlife activity and take short hikes (max. 8 km per day) on uneven terrain in the forest and on the coast. We could take short ferry rides (10 minutes) to small islands depending on wildlife activity.

Gear needed for the workshop

A camera and lenses (wide angle and/or telephoto). Optional but recommended: a tripod, neutral density (ND) filters, polarizing filters, cable release, extra batteries and memory cards. Packing list and further details will be provided to participants.

Itinerary

We depart at sunrise from Courtenay, in the Comox Valley, for our field session in the greater Comox Valley region and beyond; the area extends for about 80 km on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The workshop lasts around 8 hours, all depends on wildlife activity and photo opportunities. If we are experiencing an amazing photo opportunity at a location (great light, big wildlife activity…), we’ll make the most of it and stay longer.

Catherine Babault Photography ethics

As an ethical nature photographer, Catherine Babault is committed to reduce our impact on the unique ecosystems of Vancouver Island and beyond: participants to workshops stay on designated trails where indicated and maintain a safe and respectful distance from wildlife by using a telephoto lens. We avoid as much as possible to disturb the animals’ routine. In addition, when Catherine hires the services of local guides (boat excursions), she makes sure that they share the same respect for the environment and well-being of wild animals.

What make my workshops different from others?

  • I live on Vancouver Island. As a local, I know the area very well. I spend a lot of time in the field, all year long, no matter the weather, tracking wildlife and looking for the best places and times to photograph nature.

  • As an ethical nature photographer, I respect the environment: fauna and flora. The well-being and safety of wild animals always has priority over the participants’ aspirations. We limit our impact on their habitat as much as possible.

  • I offer a safe and friendly learning environment for everyone regardless of their gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, cultural background, age or abilities. I am part of a minority myself.

  • During the workshops, my time is entirely dedicated to the participants, not to my own shots.

  • I am fluent in both English and French.

  • Learning does not stop at the end of the workshop. I am always available for follow-up questions.
