New Photo Book: Vancouver Island Marmot, The World’s Rarest Marmot

On 21 December 2022, I will release my new photo book titled Vancouver Island Marmot, The World’s Rarest Marmot.

The Vancouver Island marmot is the most endangered mammal in Canada. Endemic to British Columbia, this marmot lives in the mountains on Vancouver Island.

In 2003, there were less than 30 marmots recorded in the wild. Thanks to the efforts of a team of dedicated experts, there are now 250 marmots roaming the mountains on the island. Through the captivating words of experts and stunning photographs, this book invites you to learn more about the Vancouver Island marmot, its plight, and the efforts that have been made to save this amazing species from extinction.

2023 Photo Workshops and New Videos

I remember the cultural revolution when the first music videos appeared on the television in the 1980s. Today, everyone posts videos on TikTok, YouTube, etc. That's why I just produced and posted my first two videos on YouTube, which you can watch here. You will discover in particular rare photos of the Vancouver Island marmot, an endangered species.

Following an increase in requests from photographers in the United States and Europe, I have just added several photo workshops for 2023. There are still spaces available for the 2022 workshops. However the maximum number of participants per workshop is five, so don't wait too long to sign up.

Ateliers pour 2023 et nouvelles vidéos

Je me souviens de la révolution culturelle lorsque les premiers vidéos clips sont apparus à la télévision dans les années 1980. Aujourd’hui, tout le monde publie des vidéos sur TikTok, YouTube, etc. C’est pourquoi, je viens de produire et poster mes deux premières vidéos sur YouTube, que vous pouvez regarder ici. Vous y découvrirez notamment des photos rares de la marmotte de l’Île de Vancouver, une espèce menacée d’extinction.

Suite à une augmentation des demandes venant de photographes des États-Unis et d’Europe, je viens d’ajouter plusieurs ateliers photo pour 2023. Il reste de la place pour les ateliers de 2022. Le nombre maximum de participants par atelier étant de cinq, n’attendez-pas trop longtemps avant de vous inscrire.

Last autumn, I had the pleasure of being filmed by CBC Radio-Canada in the field on Vancouver Island. During the interview, I talk about species of special concern in the region and endangered species like the Vancouver Island marmot. I also mention the importance of ethic in nature photography to preserve the natural world; we can all do our part by keeping a safe distance from wildlife, avoiding disturbing their routines and not interfering with their habitat.

Abstract Images, Photo Tip and Spring Workshop

Travelling is part of my life so, after more than two years on Vancouver Island, it was time to get out.

I always plan my adventures carefully: places to visit, subjects to photograph, routes, etc., which is why I travelled to Astoria, Oregon. I wanted to photograph an old rusty wagon, abandoned boats and buildings marked by the passage of time. My preparation and the time spent on site for this project gave results beyond my expectations. You can order prints here.

As I often mention during my workshops, it is important to take your time in the field: find your subject, think about your composition, adjust your camera properly according to the expected results (framing, depth of field, shutter speed, etc.) You will achieve better results than taking lots of photos hoping that one will be good enough and then trying to correct its flaws in post-processing.

This spring, reconnect with nature and sign up for a photo adventure for yourself or with a loved one, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia! Spring is an ideal time to travel: it’s an amazing palette of colours, the snow melt swells streams to form beautiful cascades, and animals are busy caring for their offsprings: very photogenic subjects. I invite you to register for my workshop from May 27 to 29, places are limited to 5 people.

Back in October, I had the pleasure of being interviewed and filmed by a wonderful team from Radio-Canada (also known as the French CBC). Pierre Beaudoin, producer, and Alex Lamic, videographer, came from Vancouver to meet me on Vancouver Island.

The video was broadcast this week on the youth program ONIVA dedicated to photography. I talk about my work as a nature photographer and my encounters with wildlife.

Au mois d’octobre dernier, j’ai eu le plaisir d’être interviewée et filmée par une super équipe de Radio-Canada. Pierre Beaudoin, réalisateur, et Alex Lamic, vidéographe, sont venus de Vancouver pour me rencontrer sur l’Île de Vancouver.

What makes my photo workshops different from others?

• I live on Vancouver Island. As a local, I know the area very well. I spend a lot of time in the field, all year long, no matter the weather, tracking wildlife and looking for the best places and times to photograph nature.

• As an ethical nature photographer, I respect the environment: fauna and flora. The well-being and safety of wild animals always has priority over the participants’ aspirations. We limit our impact on their habitat as much as possible.

• I offer a safe and friendly learning environment for everyone no matter their gender, sexual orientation, identity, background, culture, age or abilities. I am part of a minority myself.

• During the workshops, my time is entirely dedicated to the participants, not to my own shots.

• I am fluent in both English and French.

• Learning does not stop at the end of the workshop. I am always available for follow-up questions.

En quoi mes ateliers de photo sont-ils différents des autres ?

• Je vis sur l'île de Vancouver. En tant qu’habitante, je connais très bien la région. Je passe beaucoup de temps sur le terrain, toute l'année, quelle que soit la météo, à pister la faune et à chercher les meilleurs endroits et moments pour photographier la nature.

• En tant que photographe de la nature éthique, je respecte l'environnement, la faune et la flore. Le bien-être et la sécurité des animaux sauvages ont toujours priorité sur les aspirations des participants. Nous limitons au maximum notre impact sur leur habitat.

• J'offre un environnement d'apprentissage sûr et convivial pour tout le monde, quel que soit son sexe, son orientation sexuelle, son identité, ses origines, sa culture, son âge ou ses capacités. Je fais moi-même partie d'une minorité.

• Pendant les ateliers, mon temps est entièrement dédié aux participants, pas à mes propres prises de vue.

• Je parle couramment l'anglais et le français.

• L'apprentissage ne s'arrête pas à la fin de l'atelier. Je suis toujours disponible pour les questions de suivi.

Atelier au Congrès virtuel de l'APPIPC 2021

Le 22 octobre, j’ai eu l’honneur de donner un atelier sur la photographie de nature lors du Congrès virtuel de l’APPIPC dont le sujet cette année est En harmonie avec la nature. C’est toujours un plaisir de partager ma passion pour la photographie avec un auditoire intéressé et engagé.

This summer, I had the pleasant surprise of being contacted by the producer of the youth program ONIVA on Radio-Canada, who wanted to do an interview about my work as a nature photographer.

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting Pierre Beaudoin in person on Vancouver Island to make this project a reality. I enjoyed this first experience in front of the camera in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and showing one of my favorite places on Vancouver Island for autumn nature photography.
